AirVenture2000

Here are some pictures from our trip to AirVenture2000. You may notice my pictures are larger than usual. I used my 35mm camera rather than my digital camera and requested a photo CD when I developed the film. The pictures are about twice the size of my other pictures but I have compressed them so they will download faster.

Here is our camping spot and our new Honda CRV. You would be amazed how much stuff you can fit into that car. We carried all our camping gear plus two bikes. And on the return trip we also fit in all the welded parts, a canopy, two cowling halves and the engine mount.   8/6/00

Here is the Sonex booth. They were in the same spot as last year and there were always lots of interested people coming by.   8/6/00
Here is a look at the tri-gear Sonex with a VW engine which flew recently.   8/6/00
Here is the tail-dragger Sonex shining in the sun. John said he had not polished it since Sun-N-Fun and it still looks great. I picked up some of the Nuvite polish to try for myself.  8/6/00
Here is the new Aero-Vee 2000 VW conversion. They are still in the testing phase but it looks like a winner.   8/6/00
You can see the red back plate that replaces the Diehl accessory case found on most VW conversions. It holds the alternator, ignition and the starter. The center plate is removable to get at the alternator and can be replaced with another mount for a normal mag if you want dual ignition. You may also notice that the fly wheel is smaller diameter than a standard flywheel.   8/6/00
Here you can see the starter. John was also talking about a pull starter that would allow you to get rid of the starter and electrical system if you wanted a real light Sonex.   8/6/00
Here you can see one of the two ignition coils that fire the plugs. Each fires two cylinders. John says that if one fails, two cylinders will be enough power to keep the Sonex flying all day.  When you land, you will be able to go to the local hardware store and pickup a new coil, they are from a Briggs & Stratton Engine.  8/6/00
Here you can see the carb, intake and exhaust. John said the final intake manifold and exhaust pipes will be computer bent stainless steel tubing. The intake will be all one piece and not use the connector hose and hose clamps shown here.   8/6/00

Here is a close up of the new Aero-Vee throttle body. John says it is a lot like the old Posa carb but with several refinements to make it more user friendly. It has a mixture control and does not need a fuel pump. Rather than a butterfly it has a variable venturi like the Posa or Ellison. The cable mounts are integral to the body so there will be no need to build your own mounts. John also want to try it on the Jabiru engines to replace the Bings   8/6/00

Here is Pete Buck standing Next to Betty (red shirts). I talked to Pete about the Convecta motoglider. He is beginning to work on the plans. The fuselage is the same as the Sonex from the cockpit forward but with a different tail section. The wings have a shorter chord that the Sonex and will be much longer.  The spar caps will be similar to the Sonex but be thicker. The flaps will be nearly full span and will reflex to reduce drag at higher speeds.  8/6/00
Here is Jason Monnet (red shirt) showing off the Sonex.  Jason, Pete and Betty took time off their regular jobs to come and help out at the Sonex booth. 8/6/00
Here is Betty Monnet talking to a potential customer. BTW, a person at the show offered me $100 bucks to copy my plans and give the copies to him so he could copy and resell them.  I told him to get stuffed. These people work hard for their money and the excellent plans, workshop and support are a bargain for twice the price. If someone offers you $100 to copy the plans I hope you tell them to get stuffed to. 8/6/00
Here is another volunteer that worked the booth all week, Tony Spicer (white Sonex shirt). Jeremy told me that Tony worked for beer. They thought that was a pretty good deal until they found out just how much beer Tony could drink ;^).   8/6/00
