I picked the perfect
day to move N36SX to the airport. I enlisted several of my friends from
EAA Chapter 33 to give me a hand. (thanks again guys.) 6/02/02 |

I rented a truck
for the journey. The Sonex fits perfectly into a 20" truck. We were lucky
that the truck came with a lift. We were able to roll the main wheels onto
the lift and with one person lifting the tailwheel, up it went. I then spent
a lot of time tying the fuselage down so it would not move during the trip.

Fortunately we
arrived without a scratch. We then went to work attaching the wings.

With the wings
on, I went about assembling all the bits and pieces. I am installing the
seat. Note the seat belts hanging below the fuselage. I still have not installed
the aft bottom skin. I wanted to make sure I had all the cables and wires
hooked up correctly before I sealed the tail cone up. 6/02/02 |

Next comes the
propeller. It is really looking like an airplane now.

Back to the engine
compartment. You can see that I am using the standard Jabiru muffler rather
than the straight pipes that the Monetts like. In addition to being quieter,
it gives me a place for a heat muff. The muff started a flat sheet with
the sides bent up then I used my fluting pliers to flute the edges and create
the cylinder shape. The left half is for carb heat and the right for cabin
heat. 6/02/02 |
|
The gear leg fairings
look cool but are a PITA to attach to the legs. The hinge pin at the
trailing edge goes through the cabin floor before going into the fairing.

|
I am using a Sensenich
54"x60" wood prop. 6/02/02 |
|
I should have registered
my plane when I reserved my N--number. The FSDO won't come to inspect until
I get my registration back. 6/02/02 |
|
I used 3M's Safety
Walk self-adhesive tread. One roll did the whole wing walk. I also added
a "No Step" sign to keep people from stepping on the flap. 6/02/02 |
|
Alan Kritzman,
a friend of mine, let me use his spray booth and helped me paint my fiberglass
parts. It turned out well but I hate painting. Next time I will pay someone
to do it for me. 6/02/02 |

Dun dun ta da.
Resplendent in her finery N36SX makes her public debut to the applause of
appreciative on lookers. (OK it was just me but it was still a special moment)
6/02/02 |
|
This season she
will be sporting the stylish blue sparkle tail tips. 6/02/02 |
|
And what vertical
stabilizer would be complete without a dazzling position light.
6/02/02 |
|
She has got it
up front where it counts. Her six jugs are barely contained by this form-fitting
cowl. 6/02/02 |
|
Her pouting red
prop tips whisper "Hang on tight because you are in for a very bumpy ride!"
6/02/02 |
|
Yes, you are right.
I have been spending way too much time with my plane. 6/02/02 |
