Tail Rigging

The first step in fitting the tail surfaces was to make sure every thing was going to fit. The horizontal stabilizer (HS) fit pretty well. I did have to trim the leading edge a little to clear the fuselage sides. The real trick was to make sure that the bolt holes on the HS would match up with the longerons and the cross members that are just below the longerons. I had previously marked the locations of the cross members so it was easy to make sure the lined up.   6/12/00

The next step was to make sure the vertical stabilizer (VS) would fit in place. I had to trim the turtle deck so that I could squeeze the forward attach plate in front of the HS forward spar.  Once I was sure every thing fit I could clamp them in place and drill them starting with the HS 6/12/00
I was surprised how well every thing fit. Even though I built the HS and VS over a year ago before all the plans were finalized.  6/12/00
Here is a look at the VS kingpost. At this point I have still not bolted or riveted any thing in place. Once you rivet the lower tail post to the fuselage I don't think I would be able to the VS on or off. 6/12/00
Here you can see how close the elevator torque tube comes to the kingpost on the VS. I will tell you how I dealt with that later.  6/12/00
Here you can see into the aft-fuselage through the inspection hole. I was having problems getting the elevator to go to the full down position. The horn was bumping into the cross member. I had to modify (grind) the horn so that it would clear the cross member.   6/12/00
You can see here that I modified the cross member slightly was well. I made most of the modification to the horn since it is 3/16" 4130 steel and quite strong.  6/12/00
At full up elevator I also had problems. The back of the horn near the torque tube was rubbing the VS kingpost and the tip of the horn was bumping against the Y that connects the upper longerons.  6/12/00
Here you can see where I reshaped the forward and aft  sides of the horn so that it would clear every thing and still have positive stops at the up and down limits. 6/12/00
I also had to grind the horn near the torque tube to clear the kingpost. At full down elevator, as shown here, it was not a problem. It would only rub near full up elevator.   6/12/00
Here you can see the where I ground the horn.  6/12/00
Here is a close up of where I ground the horn.  6/12/00
This is a view of the left side of the rudder looking forward. I had to round the edge of the fuselage stop plate slightly to clear the rudder horn.  6/12/00
