Here is the tank
padded with 1/8" cork. I thought the 3/16" felt as called for in the plans
would be to thick. I later found that even the cork was to thick and I
ended up using thin self stick felt which I found in a fabric store. 8/1/00 |

Here are the tank
straps. I bent the curve at the ends over a wine bottle (empty of course)
and free handed the middle curve. 8/1/00 |

Here you can see
that I finally got the strap bolted on. This is just temporary until I
can get just the right size bolt. I am not looking forward to trying to
fit the forward strap. I think I will create a 1 /8 size clone of myself
to do the Job. I will call him MiniMe. 8/1/00 |

the front part of the tank with the upper firewall off. The step on front
of the tank is resting on the upper firewall cross tie. 8/1/00 |

Here is the new
style tank vent. The vent described in the plans that exits out the bottom
of the cowl, will tend to drain the top gallon of fuel. This arrangement
will allow a tank that was filled in the tail low position to keep all
its fuel when flying level. 9/16/00 |

Here is my gascolator.
I am using the Andair
gascolator. You can also see the hose connecting the gascolator to the
carburetor. Also not the fire sleeve around this hose to keep the hose
from burning through and spreading gas in the event of a fire. 9/16/00 |

Here I have just
finished the aluminum tube connecting the gas tank through the firewall
and to the gascolator. It takes a special flair tool that I borrowed from
an RV friend. Also note that the flair angle on an aircraft fitting is
different that an automotive flair and the two are not compatible. I am
using aircraft aluminum fittings which are lighter than the brass fittings
and I just love the blue color. 9/16/00 |

Here is the other
side of the firewall. I used a simple spring bender to keep the tube from
collapsing on me as I made the bends. I started at the tank end by flairing
the tube and fitting it to the shutoff valve to gauge where I needed to
place the Z bend to clear the rudder pedals. Then with that in place I
went to the engine side of the firewall and gauged where the bend down
to the gascolator should be. Finally I cut the tube and flaired the gascolator
end. But remember to have the sleeves, nuts and grommets in place before
you bend and flair or you will be making a new line. 9/16/00 |

Here is my technique
for getting at things under the panel. This is how I tightened the six
nuts that attach the motor mount angles to the top longeron. These cannot
be tightened until the glarescreen is in place. 1/19/02 |

"Can you hand me
that 3/8" wrench?" This is definitely a two man job. 1/19/02 |
